The Invisible Footprint

Did you know software development companies can now measure their environmental impact with precision using Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) scoring?

SCI calculates the rate of carbon emissions for any software system - from small applications to massive distributed cloud systems. The formula is straightforward: SCI = (Operational Emissions + Embodied Emissions) per Functional Unit.

Here's how it breaks down:

- Operational Emissions come from the energy your software consumes while running. This includes servers, databases, networking equipment, and even idle machines waiting in the background.

- Embodied Emissions represent the carbon footprint from manufacturing and disposing of hardware. When your software runs on a server, you're allocated a portion of that server's total manufacturing emissions based on how much of its resources and lifespan you use.

- Functional Unit defines how your application scales - per user, per API call, per transaction, or any metric that makes sense for your business. The score encourages three types of improvements: writing more energy-efficient code, using hardware more effectively, and timing computations to leverage cleaner energy sources when possible.

Why is this important today?

With the explosive growth of AI in various industries, this topic has become urgent. Currently, many of us are in the discovery phase generating images, requesting shopping lists, and satisfying our curiosity. The true power of AI is unleashed when the value it creates is exponentially greater than the resources it consumes. It's not that we should be ashamed of occasional use, but instead that we should focus collectively on more practical applications.

Not all AI usage is equal. We need honest conversations about value versus waste.
